Laser Hair Removal: The Honest Truth

If you’ve ever looked into laser hair removal, you’ve probably ended up more confused than when you started.

Most people are either worried it’s too expensive, or that it won’t work for them. Prices are all over the place, and no one seems to give the same answer… confusing or what!?

So here it is, in plain English.

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in your hair. The light travels down the hair and heats the follicle, which slows down or disrupts future growth. However, it doesn’t work the same for everyone.

Laser only works on darker hairs. If your hair is blonde, grey or red, there simply isn’t enough pigment for the laser to pick it up properly, so results can be limited.

In those cases, you’re far better off looking at electrolysis. It’s clinically recognised as permanent hair removal and can treat all hair colours, and is especially effective for smaller, stubborn areas like the chin or upper lip.

You’ll also need a course of treatments. Hair grows in cycles, and laser only works when the hair is in the right stage. That’s why appointments are spaced out - you’re catching different hairs as they come through.

Now, the questions everyone always asks…

Does it hurt?
Not really - and definitely not as bad as people expect. Most describe it as a quick hot pinch. In my opinion, it’s nowhere near as painful as waxing, and some areas can actually feel quite relaxing. If you’ve ever had injectables, those are far worse!

Is it permanent?
Laser gives long-term, often very significant reduction. For many people, most of the hair is gone and what’s left is finer and slower to grow.

But here’s the honest bit… it can make you a bit lazy!

Due to the fact you’re not constantly dealing with hair anymore, you stop thinking about it. Then suddenly, weeks later, you catch sight of the odd rogue long hair and think “where did that come from?” It’s not that it’s growing loads - you’ve just stopped checking - so yes, it can feel permanent day to day, but occasional stray hairs and top-ups are normal.

Is it safe?
It can be, but only when done properly.

Things like sun exposure and certain medications can affect how your skin reacts and increase the risk of burns or pigmentation problems. That’s why a proper consultation and patch test should always be part of the process.

Now let’s talk about price, because this is where people get caught out.

You’ll see some places advertising very low prices, and others charging more for the same area -  but don’t be fooled.

A lower price per session often means you’ll need more sessions to get the same end result. This is often the case with IPL devices, which aren’t true lasers but are sometimes marketed as if they are. They can work, but they’re usually less powerful, so you end up coming back more often.

With a proper medical-grade laser, treatments are more targeted and effective, so you’ll typically need fewer sessions overall. So while one option looks cheaper upfront, it doesn’t always work out that way long term.

So, is it worth it?

If you’re expecting completely hair-free skin forever, you might need to adjust expectations slightly but for many people, it takes away the constant cycle of shaving, waxing, and worrying and that can be genuinely life changing.
