Unwanted Hair

Many of our clients who come into the clinic often have lots of questions regarding hair growth but are sometimes just too embarrassed to talk about it.

I would just like to reassure you that many people experience hair growth in unwanted areas (usually around the chin, jawline, lip and nipples) at some stage in their life – don’t panic – this is absolutely normal – and something most people don’t like talking about, let alone confessing. It happens to all of us- just nobody talks about it.

I therefore want to address the elephant in the room and hopefully answer any questions you have but are maybe too embarrassed to ask.

Why does this happen?

Usually this is hormone related, so for ladies, you may experience tough thick hair growth in usually the chin and upper lip areas.

This is usually when oestrogen levels decline so the adrenal androgens (male hormone) become more dominant. (Yes, females also have testosterone in their bodies too).

When this happens it brings with it the associated male hair growth pattern around the beard area, which many of us don’t welcome!

So what can we do?

There are several solutions available...

Hair Removal Treatments

Waxing or Threading

This is where we apply wax or a piece of cotton and pull the hair out by the root. You would need to come back in every month for maintenance treatments as these methods aren’t permanent.

However, they are very quick, effective and immediate. I would also like to reassure everyone that these methods DO NOT make the hairs come back darker or thicker.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is the only proven permanent method of hair removal. A tiny sterile probe is inserted carefully into the hair follicle, and then a tiny amount of energy is then skilfully discharged down to the root of the hair.

As the energy is applied it radiates into the surrounding tissues, destroying the growth cells at the root of the hair, thus affecting its ability to produce new hair growth.

Electrolysis has come on in leaps and bounds and is incredibly comfortable and fast, compared to how it use to be a few years ago.

It is a highly effective treatment and brilliant for treating small areas of hair growth.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal, known as permanent hair reduction (as we cannot legally call it ‘permanent hair removal), is superb at removing darker hairs fast and safely. It is an incredibly effective method and loved by many.

It can treat large areas such as the legs, back, bikini, face and underarm.

The only downside is white and grey hairs cannot be treated, and blonde and red hairs are challenging to treat and often do not get the same amazing results people achieve with darker hair.

I would recommend having this treatment after the Summer, as it is best to keep the treated area out of the sun.

Laser hair removal uses light energy to target the pigment in a group of hairs. The light travels down the shaft of the hairs and into the hair follicle. The heat from the laser destroys the hair follicle and a hair can no longer grow from it.

Generally, people need about 6 – 8 sessions for a successful semi-permanent result. It can be difficult to destroy every single follicle, so most people will experience a tiny bit of regrowth.
