Not all Laser Hair Removal treatments are true lasers. A large number of practises promote and market IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments as Laser Hair Removal.
These are commonly found on daily deal web pages, where it can be very tempting to shop around for the best deal. However, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
There is infact a significant difference between a laser and an IPL machine, when it comes to permanent hair reduction…
IPL | Laser |
More sessions required | Fewer sessions required |
Can cause burns on darker skin tones | Can be used on all skin types |
IPL ‘s are not lasers, they are broad spectrums of dispersed wave lengths which cannot be focused to a concentrated | Lasers use a single precise Wavelength of light with a concentrated beam and specific target |
Shallow penetration | Deep penetration, targeting the root of the hair, for effective removal of deeper thicker hairs |
Results are less effective | Results are extremely effective |
In terms of skin conditions, IPL can be used very successfully to treat a variety of common complaints such as blemishes, age spots and acne scars.
IPLs are unable to target the hair follicle specifically, which can result in potential damage to the skin
Being FDA approved, the Lumenis LightSheer Desire Laser is effective on all skin types.
As with all light based therapies, IPL works by penetrating a wave of energy which is attracted to the pigment inside the hair. The light is then absorbed by the pigment and turned into heat, which results in the hair being destroyed.
The great thing about laser is that you can specifically set them up, adapting the wavelengths to target an exact pigment”.
The easiest way to explain the difference is the laser is like a sniper that can precisely hit a single target with one shot, whereas IPL is like a grenade that hits several targets at once.
